KUALA LUMPUR–When people think of a nursing home, they often imagine a place that only provides beds and medical care. However, at Pertubuhan Kebajikan Orang Tua Cacat Dan Kurang Upaya Taman Connaught in Kuala Lumpur, residents find more than shelter. They also find friendship, support, and a sense of belonging.

The nursing home is home to more than 30 residents, ranging in age from their late forties to over 90 years old. Each resident has a unique life story. The oldest resident, Jiao Chong Hui, is 92 years old and enjoys sharing memories from his younger days. The youngest resident chose not to reveal his name, reflecting the importance of privacy and dignity.

According to the manager, Li Jinfeng, caring for elderly residents goes beyond
meeting their physical needs. “Everyone comes from a different background, and everyone has a different story,” he said. He added,

“A nursing home is more than a place to stay—it is a place where people find care, companionship, and dignity. What many elderly people need most is someone willing to listen to them.” —Li Jinfeng.

One resident, identified as LD, spoke positively about life at the home. “The manager is very good and takes good care of us,” he said. “Everyone here looks after one another, and I feel comfortable living here.” Li Jinfeng also noted, “Many residents feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts with fellow residents.”

Three months ago, an elderly resident named DuoYiPu became upset late at night. Li Jinfeng noticed his condition and stayed with him, offering comfort and companionship until he finally fell asleep. The incident reflects the caring environment that residents experience every day.

Despite its warm atmosphere, running the nursing home is not easy. Monthly
operating expenses are approximately RM38,600, covering rent, staff salaries, food, utilities, healthcare, and vehicle maintenance. When donations are not enough, Li Jinfeng sometimes uses his own money to ensure residents continue receiving proper care.

Although financial challenges remain, the nursing home continues to provide not only care and shelter but also dignity, compassion, and a true sense of home for its residents.
