RAWANG – Charles never imagined he would spend his thirties surrounded by hundreds of stray dogs. This is nothing like his former life.

An Unpredictable Rescue Journey

Charles once worked in Singapore as a Japanese cuisine chef. After returning to Malaysia, he took a job at a chicken farm. When the farm became a dog shelter, he naturally became a volunteer and never left. “I’m in my thirties, the prime time to build my career. Of course I’ve thought about a better job. But I just can’t leave them.”

A Heartbreaking Discovery

Some dogs that are captured by municipal officials do not believe in humans anymore and have become resistant. Some dogs are simply deserted by their owners but still be friendly. “Dogs have a soul. Treat them nicely and they will treat you nicely,” Charles said.

Hardest Days

During the pandemic, the food prices increased while donations declined. “We had nothing else but to ensure that the dogs did not go hungry,” he states. Charles and his volunteers scavenged the markets for any leftover vegetables and bits of chicken that were either the head or entrails of the chicken to create broth which they mixed with rice. Months ago, Charles lost his first dog, one he had since the farm days, due to sickness. It breaks his heart when think about it.

Managing the shelter today presents a host of difficulties. Charles has estimated that the average monthly expenditure is around RM20,000 to provide food, medication, and utility bills on an ongoing basis. The shelter is kept in operation primarily through individual and business donations.

A Last Request

Charles also conveys a direct message to pet owners: “Don’t do it out of momentary excitement. Owning a dog requires a strong sense of responsibility, as well as a commitment from puppyhood till they grow up.” Many people abandon their dogs owing to monetary issues and lack of interest.

When asked to sum up his journey, Charles smiles. “I’m such a pushover, pouring all my compassion into them.” He admits he sometimes dreams of better pay, but for now, he stays for guarding eyes that still choose to trust after being let down by humans.
