Kuala Lumpur——Many people enjoy comic books only as an activity.Comic books are just a pastime to some. To Antonio, they are a means for people to communicate, be creative, and be imaginative. Antonio has been working at Dāny Ché Comics in Amcorp Mall for 6 years, and has been assisting customers in the shop in finding new stories and exploring the world of comics.

Antonio, a staff member who has worked at the comic book store for six years,
welcomes customers with his passion for comics and storytelling.

While there are only about 25 customers per day, it still has a loyal base of readers and collectors. Antonio says that many visitors are seasoned comic book connoisseurs and frequent returners looking for new comics or rare editions. Meanwhile, the shop is able to attract even infrequent visitors who have little or no knowledge of comic books.

There’s also new people who don’t know anything about comics, Antonio said. “Most of them, however, are collectors and comic book fans.” Antonio has been exposed to various individuals in the store, from different ages and backgrounds. In this regard, he has found that comics are more popular than he thought they would be. He explained that “comic books are for everybody. “It’s for anyone, not just one particular group of people because they’re a different race, different gender or whatever.”

Store employee Antonio prepares and organizes comic book orders, supporting the store’s daily operations and customer services.

Antonio thinks comics are a medium that does something different in combining a story and the visual arts. Comic books are used by writers and artists to communicate an idea, imagination and personal creativity. For this reason, he doesn’t consider comics to be a hobby. It’s a form of art and creation, he said. It is a means to highlight stories, imagination and creativity.

With the many thousands of comic books that exist, many new players often do not know where to start. Antonio reminds readers to remember that they are reading for fun and not to read the stories in order.
It’s about reading and enjoying the art and the stories,” he said. Antonio has been in the industry for six years, and he still observes the power of
comic books to unite people. Long time collectors or first time readers, the common love of stories and art brings a sense of community in the store.
