For nine years, this Nepalese security guard has stood guard at the gate of the
residential community day after day. Since taking up his post in 2017, he has repeated the same work every day: registering visitors, patrolling the car park, and managing the rules for entering and leaving the community. Few passersby know that behind his seemingly ordinary daily duty lies hidden hardship that troubles him constantly

As a migrant worker from Nepal, he is sometimes treated coldly and deliberately neglected by some locals. When he enforces the community’s management
regulations, some residents deliberately ignore his reminders due to prejudice against foreigners.

“This is the main point here because they think we are foreigners, that’s why they don’t want to follow us. Not everyone, just some people. It’s so difficult sometimes; only a few people act like this, but it still makes the job tough at times.” The security guard admitted that these unfair moments made him feel bad, but he never abandoned his duty to look after the whole neighbourhood.

Devotion to Repetitive Daily Shifts

Despite the monotonous and repetitive nature of his daily work, he never felt tired or bored. “I have been working at this same job for a long time, so I do not feel bored. Our duties are the same every day, that is why I do not feel bored.” His long-term work experience has kept him focused on protecting the safety of the community all the time.

Most of the residents are friendly to him and are grateful for his efforts. However, the occasional discrimination he encounters remains a painful issue that he finds it difficult to let go of in his work.
