KUALA LUMPUR – To many churchgoers, security guards are simply the people who direct traffic and stand at the entrance. However, their role extends far beyond these visible duties. For 50-year-old Rubin, becoming a church security guard has been more than a career change and it  has become a new purpose in life.

Rubin spent years working as a tow truck driver for insurance companies. After developing  arthritis in his knees, he could no longer continue the physically demanding job. He moved to  Kuala Lumpur alone while his family remained in Kuantan and joined the church security team  a year ago.

Today, Rubin’s responsibilities include patrolling the church compound, guiding visitors to  parking spaces, and ensuring the safety of worshippers. “Our main responsibility is safety and  security. We need to look at the place overall and make sure everyone is safe,” he said.

Although he enjoys his work, Rubin admitted that standing under the hot sun for long hours  can be challenging. He also occasionally deals with difficult situations, including visitors who  misunderstand parking regulations for OKU spaces. Despite the challenges, Rubin finds joy in serving the church community.

One of his favourite memories is celebrating Chinese New Year, when church members express their appreciation by giving security guards red packets. Guided by his belief to “be good and do good,” Rubin continues to serve with dedication, reminding us that the people working quietly behind the scenes help make every visit to church a safe and welcoming experience.
